  • Norton VPN – need it or not?

Posted by charlie-wiley on 02/03/2021 at 3:36 PM

I just purchased Norton 360 and it includes a VPN for each device. When I connect the VPN at home on my Spectrum Internet Provider, it frequently “disconnects.” I called Norton support and they told me that as long as I’m using my home internet connection, I DO NOT need a VPN as my home connection is always secure…. this sounds “fishy” to me…. any other thoughts? Thanks!

    Hello Charlie,

It looks like many Spectrum ISP uses are experiencing the same issue, tap or click here for the forum thread on the subject. Take a look at the last 2 posts.

It looks like some users have had to make changes on their firewall along with having to make a phone call to spectrum.

    Thanks, John…
Evidently, Spectrum must have done something as when I reconnected this afternoon, it hasn’t disconnected yet. I’ll watch it and post again as I see how it develops.

BUT, there’s still my second question…. Do I need the VPN when connected to my own router at home OR only when I’m on shared WiFi outside the home? Thanks….

    Hello Charlie,

That is completely up to you, yes you will be safer and not be tracked as much. However the trade off is generally slower speeds. So if you are not worried about speed, then yes I would use the VPN at home.

Thanks, John….. that is what I needed to know. Also, as a followup, my Norton VPN has been disconnecting at least every 2 hours on my Spectrum ISP, so I’m notifying them today of this and hopefully can get it resolved. Blessings…..

Oh, one more thing…. When I’m away from home, I NEVER use a public WiFi connection, I always use my AT&T phone’s hotspot function (it is set up securely). Do I still need to have my VPN active when I’m on my phone’s hotspot? Thanks!

    Hello Charlie,

If security is a concert, you should always be using your VPN. This article here applies to your cell phone as an ISP as well.
