  • Net-Op Tech Support: Is It Safe?

Posted by mike-gianquitto on 02/05/2023 at 10:24 AM

I currently have a “Total Tech Support” Membership with Best Buy’s Geek Squad. I got it a few years when I purchased a new laptop and desktop.

I am ultra-safe with my online purchases and browsing. While the membership price is steep, I kept the service for Webroot’s anti-virus, and well, tech support, to keep my systems running smoothly.

Every three or four months, I call Geek Squad’s tech support and have them perform a system tune-up. I watch while they perform their actions. They netop in and do what they have to do. Both my laptop and desktop have been running flawlessly since I purchased in 2019.

With that said, netop makes me leary. Whenever they complete the job, I always wonder if something was planted on my devices.

So, what do ya’ll feel about netop access to your system? Security risk? Better alternative options to keep my systems running top notch?

    Appreciate your comments and suggestions.

    Mike

    Hello Mike Gianquitto,

It looks like it is reliable software, they have been around for at least 3 years according to their youtube channel here.

I’d be more worried about them having access all the time, are you able to uninstall the software and only install it when needed?

Thank you for the reply. They do not have any software or programs on my system.

The procedure to netop in, guides the member to the Best Buy website ( that I type into my own browser), the following page that loads is a dialog box that will connect you with a Best Buy agent. I do this while I am on the phone with the Best Buy agent.

From there, you basically click a box that you accept the terms of service, and voila they’re in. I find no residual applications left on my system when they’re done ( by checking the programs that are installed on my devices).

And that YouTube link for netop remote control does not appear to be their service. This is Geek Squad that is associated with Best Buy. So Geek Squad services are the ones that are netopping in for the membership I have with Best Buy.

    Hello Mike,

Thanks for pointing that out, it seems that those are for the Admin side of things. Also, it looks like Netop was recently acquired by another company.
