  • Digitize old VHS, Mini DV, and Hi8 videos

Posted by nancy-cook on 12/04/2023 at 8:37 AM

Hello. I have 52 VHS, 28 Mini DV ME, and 43 Hi8 tapes that I would like to digitize. Unfortunately I no longer have working cameras to view and edit the tapes. I would like to convert these to DVDs. I don’t necessary need the entire original tape, just the sections showing my children. I have the time to watch, edit, and convert but don’t know what device would allow me to convert all 3 different types of videos. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello Nancy Cook,

I think your best bet is to visit Second-hand stores or Good Will to first locate a VHS player, Mini DV recorder & a HI-8 Compatible recorder. I’ve seen them often with all the wiring to power and transmit video.

Second you will need something to record the video to as you play your tapes back on these camcorders, tap or click here to see what I recommend for recording to a Thumb drive or even an SD card.
